Dans son journal La Vérité, Jules-Paul Tardivel entretient d'incessantes querelles avec ses contemporains qui osent s'éloigner de l'orthodoxie telle qu'il l'entend. Catholique convaincu et fervent nationaliste, il écrit, en 1895, un roman d'anticipation, Pour la patrie, où il imagine l'indépendance du Canada français comme le meilleur moyen de préserver la langue française et la religion catholique.
